A Hoa Mai teacher reads a Vietnamese storybook to students

Curriculum

We offer several options to meet the individual needs of children and their families. The maximum group size per classroom is 16 students, and our teacher to student ratio is 1:9.

We pay close attention to cultivating children’s self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning, exploring, socializing, and problem solving. Our curriculum is child-centered, play-based, and facilitated by empowered teachers. Our program incorporates music, reading, hands-on activities, and field trips to make learning fun and interactive.

Individualized learning

We create an individualized development plan for every student and track their progress carefully throughout the year. Our teachers take into careful consideration each child’s unique learning style when preparing the curriculum.

Our teaching philosophy

We’re committed to a culturally relevant, anti-bias, dual-language curriculum. We believe all children have remarkable capabilities and the right to a childhood filled with play, exploration, and excitement. We see children as enormously creative, and capable of complex learning through self-directed play.

We follow anti-bias practices and emphasize the value of diversity that does not stereotype, trivialize, or objectify. We take a team approach to caregiving and teaching, and we strive for collaboration with families and the wider community.

Dual language program

According to a 2007 paper by the National Council of State Supervisors, childhood bilingualism increases academic progress, narrows the opportunity gap, enriches cognitive development, and promotes cultural awareness. At Hoa Mai, we focus on the rich history, culture, and language of Vietnam and the Vietnamese community.

Student outcomes

The Vietnamese Friendship Association, Sound Child Care Solutions, and Artspace have partnered to ensure Hoa Mai meets the highest educational standards. At Hoa Mai, more of every dollar raised is spent directly on students, ensuring they reach their full potential and are well prepared for school and life. The results speak for themselves: over 90% of children we serve throughout our centers have met or exceeded the kindergarten readiness standards set by the city of Seattle, compared to 65% citywide.
